60 Days in Solitary Confinement

Women’s experiences in solitary confinement often go unheard because of limited data and little-to-no systematic research on their incarceration. Reporter Annie Brown spent a year interviewing 12 different women about their experiences in solitary to fill some of these gaps in the U.S. prison conversation.

In this collaborative illustrated video between AJ+ and Annie Brown, we retell the story of Deborah, who spent two months in solitary confinement in a women’s prison in upstate New York. This video was produced by Sarah Murphy, animated by Marisa Cruz, and edited by Dariel Medina. I storyboarded and created illustrations to accompany the piece.

To learn more about Deborah’s story, read Annie’s article “Behind Deborah’s Story” or listen to the podcast “The Trauma Room” on Life and Law.
